Investor Relations Officers play a crucial role, but understanding the full scope of their role can be tricky—we’re here to help. Click here to learn more.

For those who are new to the block, the role of an investor relations officer might be understandably unclear—it’s not a role you often meet unless you need to. An investor relations manager or someone in that role takes on the amalgamation of finance, communication, and marketing to effectively control the flow of information between a public company, its investors, and its stakeholders. With the rise of shareholder activism, it is paramount that an investor relations officer [IRO] manages the strategy, narrative, identifying the right investors and serving as the link between various departments to align on the trajectory of a company.

What Does an IRO Do?

  • Proposes strategies and communicates why they will showcase value and therefore attract and keep long-term investors. Staying lockstep with leadership team ensures alignment.
  • Understands that Investor behavior is key and has their finger on the pulse of what they care about but more importantly, how they utilize their technologies and data-gathering activities to impact a company’s strategy, capital allocation, incentive systems.
  • Targets the right investors to help further the goals of the company with knowledge of what kind of investors will work well with the executive leadership team.

What Makes a Great IRO and How Has it Changed?

Investors play a major and vital role in the success and growth of a company and transparency is key. Here are some characteristics we find to separate a good IRO from a great one.

Knowing your company’s strategy front and back

  • What are your compensation policies?
  • How is your board composition?
  • Does your company have a focus on diversity and inclusion (D&I) and environmental, social and governance (ESG/CSR) goals.

Bringing the right people to the table

Knowing who to seat at the table and cultivate relationships across various departments to ensure a uniform message is what will ensure success at the investor level. This will need to begin with someone who has access or has a high Emotional Quotient (EQ) to generate access.
