Hispanic Heritage Month Employee Spotlight: Anita Nava

|
In today’s post we’re spotlighting some insights from Anita Nava, a Design Manager at Investis Digital.

According to Hispanic Heritage Month’s website, “each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.” To honor this incredible month, Investis Digital would like to highlight some of our employees who are of Hispanic and Latino descent.

In today’s post we’re spotlighting some insights from Anita Nava, a Design Manager at Investis Digital. Anita shares, “I’ve been with the company almost 6 years now, starting as a Graphic Designer and now the Design Manager for the Phoenix office. My expertise is with email, social design, and my passion is illustration but I have worked on a wide array of projects in the past and now oversee our other great designers.”

Anita graciously answered six questions about her career, life, and heritage for us—here’s a little bit more about her in her own words:

What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?

Hispanic heritage to me means family. I can’t imagine not having my family close by but that’s how it always was growing up. I was born and raised in El Paso, Texas and we had cookouts every weekend. My grandma would be dancing to cumbias on the back patio and all my aunts, uncles and cousins came over to hang out. We always had people around, that’s just how hispanic families are, it created a sense of warmth, love, food and good times. We didn’t have to be rich to know that family was everything and we could count on each other and I’m proud of where I came from.

What advice would you give to young Latino professionals who are looking to get into the digital communications space?

Persist and know that it never hurts to ask.I feel like everyone should deserve an opportunity to prove themselves as well as get a chance to grow and better themselves and their situation no matter their race, color, or where they came from.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love the people. No matter what you look like or where you come from everyone treats you equally and they respect your expertise in what you do. I enjoy that I can be myself and can talk to my managers as people instead of just bosses, and, of course, I enjoy getting to have fun with my team and the opportunities we get to have creative freedom on a project.

If you could pick a personal motto, what would it be?

I’ve always tried to live by the motto “treat others as you would want to be treated”. I’m not perfect, no one is, but I feel like that quote has never been truer as it has especially this year. With the pandemic and so many protests happening there is a lot of unrest in the world and I think we all need to just take a breath to focus on what really matters.

What is a family tradition you wish to pass down, that your parents have passed down to you?

My Grandma has so many great recipes that I would consider comfort food, my favorite being her caldo de res (beef stew). I have yet to find a Mexican restaurant in Arizona that can compare to her cooking. It’s one of the things I really hope I can pass down in the future.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I really got into genealogy the past few years and have taken three different Ancestry tests and learned that from my Dad’s side I am of Mexican, Spanish, and Portuguese decent. I’ve also discovered some great stories like that my great-great-grandmother was once a cook for Pancho Villa and my Dad was in a band that opened for various Latin musical artists, one of them being Selena!
