With 2020 being an election year for the U.S., it goes without saying that social media plays a big part in informing and driving messages and telling the narrative candidates, groups and parties want to share. After months of waiting, Facebook announced via a press release additional steps their social media platform would be taking to secure the integrity of the election by encouraging voting, connecting people to authoritative information, and reducing the risks of post-election confusion.

So, what have they done?

Paid Advertisements

When it comes to paid ads the social media giant will no longer accept new political ads in the seven days leading up to the Nov. 3rd US presidential election, but will allow those that had already been approved to continue running.

COVID-19 In Person Voting Risk

Facebook will be removing posts that claim voters can get COVID-19 if they take part in voting.

Claims on Voter Fraud

Facebook will attach an informational label to content that seeks to delegitimize the outcome of the election or discuss the legitimacy of voting methods.

Victory Announcements

If any candidate or campaign tries to declare victory before the final results are in, Facebook will add a label to their posts directing people to the official results from Reuters and the National Election Pool.

The attention paid to these new parameters underscores the central role Facebook and other social media platforms are playing in the 2020 election and how advertisements continue to play an important part of communicating messages in a time when majority of social interaction takes place online.
