Prevent Issues With Custom Video Players With YouTube API

Recently an issue has been impacting sites that rely on integrating YouTube videos with customised player and branding overlays using the YouTube API. The default usage limit for the API has been dramatically reduced from Millions to Thousands of uses per day. The next day this usage will be reset. The changes appear to only affect any videos uploaded from 2016 onwards and videos uploaded prior to 2016 have not seen their quota reduced.

Additional changes to the API mean that no overlay can be applied to the videos and the default Youtube player visualization must be used. This may impact site integrations that rely on a custom overlay.

To mitigate this, we have been working with our clients that will be affected to assist in resolving this potential this issue by helping to increase the quota or finding an alternative method to host and embed the videos.
